Got a Tip?

2018 Golden Globes Awards Predictions: ‘Three Billboards,’ ‘Lady Bird’ And ‘Handmaid’s Tale’

Guillermo-del-Toro, The-Shape-Of-Water

Best Director

Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”
Steven Spielberg, “The Post”
Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Ridley Scott, “All The Money in the World”

Who will win: Guillermo del Toro
Who should win: Guillermo del Toro
Upset: Christopher Nolan
Lowdown:  If del Toro wins, it likely means “Three Billboards” is taking Best Picture – Drama over “Shape of Water.”  If Nolan surprises it could mean “Shape” is winning the top category instead.

Saoirse-Ronan, Greta-Gerwig, Lady-Bird

Best Screenplay

Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Liz Hannah, Josh Singer, “The Post”
Guillermo del Toro, Vanessa Taylor, “The Shape of Water”
Aaron Sorkin, “Molly’s Game”

Who will win: Greta Gerwig
Who should win: Martin McDonagh
Upset: Guillermo del Toro or Martin McDonagh
Lowdown:   This is Gerwig’s too lose.  Del Toro and McDonagh have a very slim shot at snatching it from her.

Dunkirk

Best Original Score

Hans Zimmer, “Dunkirk”
Jonny Greenwood, “Phantom Thread”
Alexandre Desplat, “The Shape of Water
Carter Burwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
John Williams, “The Post”

Who will win: Hans Zimmer
Who should win: Jonny Greenwood
Upset: Alexandre Desplat or Jonny Greenwood
Lowdown:  Zimmer is a two-time winner in this category who hasn’t taken the Globe home since “Gladiator” in 2001.   As a 14-time nominee (!) he’s due for number three.  It also allows “Dunkirk” to leave the Beverly Hilton with at least one statue which should give Warner Bros. some solace.

The-Greatest-Showman

Best Original Song

“This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” Benj Pasek, Justin Paul
“Remember Me” from “Coco,” Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez
“Mighty River” from “Mudbound,” Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq, Taura Stinson
“The Star” from “The Star,” Mariah Carey, Marc Shaiman
“Home” from “Ferdinand,” Nick Jonas, Justin Tranter, Nick Monson

Who will win: “This Is Me”
Who should win: “This Is Me”
Upset: “Remember Me”
Lowdown:   This is a close one. “Remember Me” from “Coco” could win, but our gut tells us the HFPA will spread the wealth and award “This Is Me” giving the “Greatest Showman” some love.

Pixar, Coco

Best Animated Feature Film

“The Breadwinner”
“Coco”
“Loving Vincent”
“The Boss Baby”
“Ferdinand”

Who will win: “Coco”
Who should win: “Coco”
Upset: There’s no upset here.
Lowdown:  “Coco” is winning. They presenters don’t even need to read the other nominees.  Just call Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina out of their seats as early as possible so we can get to the next award.

A-Fantastic-Woman

Best Foreign Language Film

“A Fantastic Woman”
“Loveless”
“First They Killed My Father”
“In the Fade”
“The Square”

Who will win: ? “A Fantastic Woman”
Who should win: “A Fantastic Woman”
Upset: “The Square” or “Loveless”
Lowdown:  Expect Chile’s Foreign Language wonder to win, but an upset here is possible.
