Got a Tip?

2020 Berlin Film Festival Competition Includes New Movies From Sally Potter, Hong Sang-Soo, Christian Petzold & More

We may be knee-deep in Sundance right now, but this is just the beginning of the festival season. And one of the biggest film events of the year is coming up in less than a month, the 2020 Berlin Film Festival.

And with the fest beginning so soon, we finally know which 18 films will be competing for the coveted Golden Bear award. This year’s lineup is led by some pretty big names, including filmmakers such as Sally Potter, Abel Ferrara, Kelly Reichardt, Christian Petzold, and Hong Sang-Soo.

Potter is set to premiere her film “The Roads Not Taken,” which has an incredible cast that includes Javier Bardem, Elle Fanning, Salma Hayek, and Laura Linney. This year marks Potter’s return to Berlin, where she premiered her previous film “The Party” in competition. Of the 18 films selected for the main competition, six of them are helmed by women. Compared to many other major film festivals, this is proof that Berlin is taking inclusivity to heart.

Another interesting thing to note about the competition is that there are exactly zero films from Netflix selected. This, once again, shows that Berlin is sticking to its promise of selecting films that are made for theatrical release. We’ll have to see if some of the other festivals that have held this stance, most notably Cannes, continue to follow this path, shunning streaming films.

The 2020 Berlin Film Festival will begin on February 20. You can see the full competition list below (via Deadline).
