Three elements were highly underrated from “21 Jump Street.”: the score by Mark Mothersbaugh, the excellent theme song written by Mothersbaugh, and the overall soundtrack. In fact, it’s kind of crazy that no soundtrack was ever released considering the eclectic hits on it, but for some reason no disc or digital collection ever came out (but you can find all of the songs in the first movie here).
But Columbia Pictures/MGM in association with Casablancas Records are learning from their mistakes, as a soundtrack disc for the sequel “22 Jump Street” is on the way. The first movie definitely had a chaotic alt/indie EDM feel to it and that’s pronounced even further in the sequel (in fact, the party-crazy EDM-y remix of Mothersbaugh’s said theme at the top of the movie kinda rules).
The soundtrack will feature cuts by Wiz Khalifa, Duck Sauce, Tiesto, Steve Aoki and includes previously unreleased material as well. Rye Rye and Esthero performed the EDM-esque cover of the “main theme” from the TV show in the first movie and this time that signature song is transformed by Angel Haze featuring Ludacris. The “22 Jump Street” soundtrack hits iTunes and digital retailers early on June 10th and the physical disc arrives June 24th. “22 Jump Street” the movie hits theaters June 13th. Here’s our review, the tracklist is below, along with the most of the cuts, including a first listen of the aforementioned Haze and Ludacris track. [Film Music Reporter]
