A year on, the jury is firmly in on “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and the consensus is that it’s a damn fine film: trim, streamlined, exhilarating, action-packed, and surprisingly emotionally resonant. Not to mention, it’s one of the best-crafted movies of recent memory; even while boasting a blockbuster-size budget, director George Miller poured love into every frame and aspect of the film. And for that, people took notice: The film racked up six Oscar wins and another four nominations, wound up on a plethora of best-of-the-year lists (including our own, where it took the much-coveted top spot), and will likely outlive us all.

The only thing more talked about than the film’s out-and-out excellence is the astounding visual effects work that Miller and co. created in the deserts of Namibia. And, to commemorate that craftsmanship, Brave New World VFX (courtesy of One Perfect Shot), who worked on the film, have put together a video essay detailing the gorgeous marriage of practical and computer-generated images that culminated in one of the most striking and visually staggering films in years. That VFX breakdown is a thrill ride in its own right, highlighting the breathtaking work that went into creating the spectacle of the film — the type of spectacle we’ve come to expect from each and every blockbuster, and thus take shamefully for granted.
