Following up her role as the strong yet extremely dull femme stereotype in this summer’s “Get Smart,” Anne Hathaway is playing a ex-model who has been in and out of rehab for the past 10 years in Jonathan Demme’s new film “Rachel Getting Married,” which is slated to be screened at this falls Venice film festival.
The drama appears to fall in line with other familial gathering films of the same vein and follows a troubled family’s weekend as one daughter gets married while her junky sister (Hathaway) surfaces after a long absence intent on ruining the perfect weekend.
Judging from the trailer her role as the troubled character seems impressive, granted we have not yet seen the film, but we still have to give it to Hathaway for her continued practice of starring in edgy art films (“Havoc,” “Brokeback Mountain”) in between bland blockbusters (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “Get Smart”). It has turned her image towards that of a more serious actress and has separated her from other good looking but forgettable young actresses that have failed to take risky and challenging roles.
