While rumors have swirled heavily about Benedict Cumberbatch joining the new "Star Wars" series in some capacity (and we suppose it’s still possible), today comes the news that the actor is joining a different blockbuster franchise altogether.
Deadline reports that the actor is in final negotiations for "Doctor Strange." The actors will step into the title role after the long courted Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of contention, and will beat out a number of names mentioned in recent weeks including Keanu Reeves, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Oscar Isaac, and Colin Farrell. We have no complaints about the choice, and he seems well suited to take on the role. But we’re sure fans will have their own opinion, so share it below.
Scott Derrickson directs, and "Doctor Strange" will open on July 8, 2016.
Update 12/4: In case there was any doubt, Marvel has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch is indeed Doctor Strange.
