Although she’s been working away quietly for years, with the likes of the excellent “Italian For Beginners” and the underrated “Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself,” Danish director Lone Scherfig hit the big time last year with “An Education,” picking up plaudits all year, including a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.
She’s taking a left turn at some point to direct Jessica Biel in the Mafia drama “Mob Girl,” but first she’s set to direct the romantic comedy “One Day.” The project, from “Starter For Ten” writer David Nicholls, based on his own bestselling novel, follows a couple that has a one-night stand together at university and follows them on the same day, July 15th, every year for the next twenty. Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway were previously announced as taking the lead roles, and now, The Hollywood Reporter says that Romola Garai — known to non-cinephiles for talking up an audition for the scuttled “Spider-Man 4” film) is joining the cast as well.
Garai will play a woman that Sturgess’ character marries and (spoiler!) divorces over the story’s timeframe. While we found Garai to be the weak link in Joe Wright’s “Atonement,” she was one of the few bright spots in Stephen Poliakoff’s “Glorious 39” last year, and it’s an addition to an already very promising project.
