“Logan” isn’t playing by the same rules as previous Wolverine movies. It’s going R-rated, and is already promising a much more serious tone than the already sober entries “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “The Wolverine.” Even more, with a slated score by Cliff Martinez, generally known for his moody fare for directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and Steven Soderbegh, “Logan” — at least on paper — has the makings of a truly singular superhero movie. Well, at least one ingredient is getting changed up.
Director James Mangold has revealed on Twitter (via Film Music Reporter) that Marco Beltrami is scoring “Logan.” There’s no word on what became of Martinez’s involvement, if he actually created any music, or if anything he did make will be used, but Beltrami is certainly much more MOR. The composer’s most recent efforts have included “The Shallows,” “Ben-Hur” and “Gods Of Egypt,” so not exactly the most inspiring news, however, he does have two Oscar nominations, including one for Mangold’s “3:10 To Yuma.” So here’s hoping he’s similarly inspired here.
Meanwhile, Mangold is talking up a good game about his R-rated film, claiming he’s not making a movie for kids. ” ‘Logan’ is an attempt to bring an end to Hugh’s amazing line of performances as Wolverine,” he said in the clip below. “And the ambition of doing that is to try and make an ‘adult film’ about Wolverine. To make a movie for grownups. We’re not trying to make a movie that [satisfies] everyone. We’re trying to make a movie that stands out and is different because it’s kind of a grownup drama that also features intense action.”
“Logan” lands on March 3rd.
