Got a Tip?

Olivia Colman Is The New Queen On ‘The Crown’

The second season of “The Crown” is around the corner, but it’ll be the last time you’ll see Claire Foy as the head of the royal family. Creator and writer Peter Morgan revealed some time ago, with the show tackling a new decade in Queen Elizabeth’s life with each season, they couldn’t have kept Foy on board without things getting a bit ridiculous.

“I feel that when we reach 1963-64 we’ve gone as far as we can go with Claire Foy without having to do silly things in terms of makeup to make her look older. She can’t help the fact she’s as young as she is, and if we were to go further forward we’d probably need to think about the issue of recasting everybody and so those conversations are happening now and I couldn’t tell you where we’ll come out,” Morgan said earlier this year.

So the throne will be cleared for a new actress, and for “The Crown” seasons three and four, Olivia Colman will take the sceptre. You likely know the actress from previous TV roles on “Peep Show,” “Broadchurch,” “The Night Manager,” and “Fleabag,” but no matter what she’s in, she’s usually terrific. It’ll be an interesting transition for “The Crown” to see the lead go from rising actress to established veteran, but we’d imagine the series itself will also be making some interesting gear shifts as it takes on different eras of the royal family.
