Got a Tip?

‘Coco’ Sings With 13 Annie Awards Nominations As Oscar Awaits

In case you’re curious, Pixar’s “Coco” is going to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar in March. Sure, “The Breadwinner” and “Loving Vincent” will earn nominations and even pick up some more critics’ groups honors along the way, but Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina‘s tearjerker has this one in the bag.  Keeping that in mind, the nominees for the 45th Annie Awards were announced this morning and there was no surprise that “Coco” led the way with 13 nods including Best Animated Feature.

“Coco”: Pixar’s Latest Is Magical, Rebellious and Subversive [Review]

Voted on by industry professionals, the Annie Awards celebrate the best in animated film and television, but the membership is dominated by DreamWorks Animation and Walt Disney company employees so they often lean in that direction.  That’s why it was really no surprise that “The Lego Batman Movie” was snubbed from Best Animated Feature for both DWA’s “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (critical hit, box office bomb) and “The Boss Baby” (critical bomb, box office hit).  20th Century Fox’s “Ferdinand” was also passed over in the top category while earning nominations in Production Design and Editorial. DWA lead all studios with 22 nominations although 13 came from television categories.  Disney and Pixar followed with 18 nominations.

Ponder.

Some notable nominees this year include “Big Mouth’s” “Am I Gay?” episode in the Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production category as well as Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant’s “Dear Basketball” in the Animated Short category.

The 2018 Annie Awards will be handed out on Sat. Feb 3.
