The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had their annual Oscar luncheon on Monday and from all accounts it was another happy few hours of selfies and self congratulations. The event is a chance for the nominees to be schooled on what to say and what not to say during their possible acceptance speeches, get a nice pep talk from new Academy president John Bailey and, as always, take the annual class photo.
Best and Worst of the 2018 Oscar nominations
This year’s edition featured a slew of first-time nominees including Sam Rockwell, Greta Gerwig, Mary J. Blige, Laurie Metcalf and, sigh, Kobe Bryant. The legendary Lakers player is one of the easiest nominees to spot in the photo (he’s sitting and very close to the center). A keen eye might also find Luca Guadagnino (in a grey sportscoat with purple shirt underneath), Timothee Chalamet (green suit toward the middle), Saoirse Ronan (beaming in orange), Meryl Streep, Laurie Metcalf, Steven Spielberg and a cardboard cutout of the missing Agnes Varda in the top row.
