Got a Tip?

The ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Sequel Doesn’t Sound Like It’s Coming Any Time Soon

Edge of Tomorrow,” aka “Live. Die. Repeat.,” was a surprise on a number of levels when it was released back in 2014. First, it was yet another example of Tom Cruise never aging, and still being one of the most bankable A-listers around. Second, it proved that “The Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman still had some juice left in him after the not-so-awesome “Jumper.” And finally, it showcased that Emily Blunt is a certified badass.

The sci-fi film, with a horrible title, went on to have great word of mouth, and a cult following, which led to Warner Bros. trying to get a sequel off the ground on this potential new franchise. In 2015, it was reported that Cruise had a great idea for a sequel and it was full steam ahead on prepping the film. In 2016, Liman was signed on to direct, with the stars presumably coming back, as well. Then, in 2017, it was announced that the sequel would be called “Live. Die. Repeat. And Repeat.” Horrible title, notwithstanding, it looked like filming was scheduled to begin imminently.

Alas, there’s been no word on the sequel since.

However, Emily Blunt was recently interviewed by IndieWire, and she had some interesting comments about the upcoming sequel to the sci-fi film.

“It’s a lot for all the stars to align for everyone to be free at the same time and available to do it at the same time,” she said. “They asked me to do [it] two months before I started ‘Mary Poppins.’ Tom [Cruise] was like, ‘Can you go this autumn?’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t go, I’m playing Mary Poppins for like a year, dude! I can’t do ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’”

Based on those comments, it sounds like Doug Liman and Tom Cruise were trying to rush to production on “Edge of Tomorrow 2.” However, as we know now, production never began on the sequel, so Blunt’s involvement is still up in the air.

“Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it,” she said. “There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.”

While production hasn’t started yet on the sequel, it seems like whatever version Liman and Cruise wanted to move forward with has completely fallen apart, and they’re back to square one. So, what was once a fast-tracked sequel is now turning into a series of false starts. Hopefully, for fans of the first film, the people involved can settle down on a script, and then make sure that both Cruise and Blunt are able to star.

Otherwise, it looks like the title “Live. Die. Repeat. And Repeat.” might be more prophetic than we realized.
