‘Sharp Objects’ Trailer: Amy Adams & Jean-Marc Vallée Team Up For Another HBO Contender

Everyone stop everything, we finally have a full trailer for “Sharp Objects.” HBO’s latest miniseries adapts Gillian Flynn’s first novel dripping with a mysterious and unnerving Southern Gothic atmosphere. Flynn’s novels have made a point of showing the dark and complex side of women, most famously shown in the 2014 film “Gone Girl.” “Sharp Objects” is widely considered Flynn’s edgiest story and the official plot synopsis sheds a little light on why.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, “Sharp Objects” stars Amy Adams as a reporter Camille Preaker, who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.

It’s hard to contain my excitement for this one, especially considered Amy freaking Adams stars in it – a sentiment shared with Flynn herself who referred to her as “the perfect Camille” in a Facebook post. In addition to Adams, the show stars Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, Henry Czerny, Taylor John Smith, Sophia Lillis and Madison Davenport.

All eight episodes of the miniseries will be directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (who also co-edited the series). Vallée’s close attention to detail and character makes him the perfect choice to capture the brooding tone of Flynn’s novel. This marks his second collaboration with HBO after 2017’s wildly successful and popular “Big Little Lies.

UnREAL” showrunner Marti Noxon serves as both showrunner and wrote several episodes along with the novel’s original writer Flynn. It’s actually thanks to Noxon that “Sharp Objects” is a miniseries. Speaking with Collider in January of 2017, Vallée mentioned that the original idea was to shoot it as a film, but Noxon told HBO and others that ‘this is a TV series. This is not a film. Here’s why.” He went on further praising that “she had a plan and a vision, and here we are, shooting eight episodes.”

“Sharp Objects” premieres on HBO July 8th. Watch the trailer below.
