Netflix Teaming Up With Dreamworks Animation For A 'Fast & Furious' Animated Series

Admittedly, watching the last few ‘Fast and Furious‘ films feels like you’re watching a cartoon. So, today’s news, while seemingly crazy and strange, should have made perfect sense. The mantra surrounding all the ‘Fast and Furious’ movies is that they’re “all about family.” And for the upcoming Netflix animated series based on the popular franchise, apparently, they’re taking that to heart.

According to Netflix, the streaming service has teamed up with Dreamworks Animation to begin work on a kids series based on the mega-franchise. The deal is part of a multi-year partnership between the two companies for animated series based on Universal film properties. The “Fast & Furious” animated series follows a teenager named Tony Toretto, cousin to Dom (Vin Diesel), who is recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league. Yep, so it’s basically “Fast and Furious, Jr.”

“We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures,” said Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids and Family for Netflix. “The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.”

“We are excited to extend and expand our successful relationship with Netflix by not only delivering more high-quality DreamWorks programming, but connecting fans of Universal films with fascinating new stories,” said Margie Cohn, President of DreamWorks Animation Television. “Our new home at Universal marks an exciting new chapter for storytelling at our studio, and ‘Fast & Furious’ is only the beginning.”

The “Fast & Furious” animated series will be executive produced by Diesel, as well as Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, who are producers from the live-action franchise.

There’s no word on a release date for “Fast & Furious” yet.
