We’ve waited years to find out, but now we know what filmmaker George Miller is working on next after the massive success of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Was it going to be the sequel to ‘Fury Road?’ Or perhaps, it’s that Furiosa prequel that fans have been demanding? Well, now we know, and it’s a…romance?
According to Deadline, Miller has written a script and is directing a film titled “Three Thousand Years of Longing.” Joining Miller on the project are two of the world’s finest actors, Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. While there are no plot details known at the time, other than it is an epic romance, the combination of Miller, Swinton, and Elba instantly makes ‘Longing’ one of the most anticipated films of the next couple years.

Miller has kept fairly quiet since ‘Fury Road’ was released in 2015 and ended up earning ten Academy Award nominations, winning six total. That film was mired with behind-the-scenes turmoil, with stars not being very friendly with each other and a budget that kept growing as the director kept shooting. Ultimately, all was well as ‘Fury Road’ became not just a great ‘Mad Max’ film, but one of the greatest action films of all time.
Again, we don’t know what Idris “Don’t Call Me James Bond” Elba and Tilda “Would Make A Great James Bond, When You Think About It” Swinton will be doing in “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” though it’s safe to say that exploding cars in a desert wasteland isn’t in the cards. That being said, whatever Miller has up his sleeve, we’re 100% on board. With that title, however, one has to assume the romance spans a large number of years, potentially 3,000, and there is a large chance that Elba will be longing for Swinton (as we all do) or vice versa.
Deadline says the film is still in the early stages of development, but will begin shooting sometime in 2019. Normally, we’d say that means ‘Longing’ would hit theaters in 2020, but with Miller at the helm, who knows? Either way, we’re here for it.
