‘Fyre’ Trailer: The Director Of ‘American Movie’ Details The Most Spectacular Disaster In Music Festival History

For many people around the world, the Fyre Festival only landed on their radar after the event became a disaster unlike anything seen before in the music industry. With images and videos arriving on social media depicting something on the level of “Lord of the Flies,” the Fyre Festival became the butt of a joke. And now, it’s the subject of a new documentary coming to Netflix.

In the first trailer for “Fyre,” you begin to see that this documentary isn’t so much about the festival as it is about one man in particular – Billy McFarland. The man behind it all, McFarland was a budding entrepreneur that caught the eye of rapper Ja Rule. Together, they decided to host the most exclusive music event in history, on a secluded island in the Bahamas, called the Fyre Festival. But what ended up happening is something far, far more interesting. The whole thing imploded, in truly spectacular fashion.

As if the story of the Fyre Festival isn’t enough to convince you to check out the documentary (spoiler alert – you really should, it’s good), then allow us to tell you who directed the film – Chris Smith. For those unaware, Smith most recently helmed the doc, “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which is great. But even better than that is his 1999 film (which might be one of the best docs of the past two decades), “American Movie.” Needless to say, Smith has truly outstanding documentary chops.

“Fyre” hits Netflix on January 18. You’re going to want to check this out.

Here’s the synopsis:

An exclusive behind the scenes look at the infamous unraveling of the Fyre music festival. Created by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, it was promoted as a luxury music festival on a private island in the Bahamas featuring bikini-clad supermodels, A-List musical performances and posh amenities. Guests arrived to discover the reality was far from the promises. Chris Smith, the director behind the Emmy Award Nominated documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, gives a first-hand look into the disastrous crash of Fyre as told by the organizers themselves.
