“Inception,” “Memento,” “Interstellar” – whenever Christopher Nolan‘s name is attached to a project, it carries the promise of a cinematic behemoth. All has been relatively quiet on the director’s front since 2017 when “Dunkirk“ appeared to audiences in breathtaking 70mm. But now, just days before the year ends, the trailer for the new Nolan film has appeared: the super-secretive “Tenet.”

Nolan has remained classically closed-lipped about the details of “Tenet“ and its production. We know that it’s an action epic that features espionage, seemingly on an international scale. “We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places,” the filmmaker told EW recently, coyly revealing very little of anything about plot or details. “We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way.”
Some rumors have even said the film may be connected to “Inception,” but that’s unsubstantiated as of right now and seems more like speculation run rampant.
The film’s cost, even at Nolan’s standards, is high: $225 million, according to Estonian Public Broadcasting’s June estimate. “At the budget level I’m able to work at, I really try to give the audience the most technically compelling experience I can give, with picture and sounds, something they haven’t seen before,” said Nolan, in a 2014 New York Times interview seemingly explaining his entire raison d’être. “Hollywood, when it functions at its best, has a scope that’s unmatched. In the back of my mind, that scope was always something to aim for — never to the exclusion of other things, just a larger and larger canvas.” And you can certainly count on that large canvas with another lavish 70mm release on the way.

The cast and crew of “Tenet” will include some of the most coveted names in Hollywood as well as promising new stars. John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman“) leads the movie alongside Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Clémence Poésy (“In Bruges“), and Bollywood legend Dimple Kapadia. Hoyte van Hoytema, cinematographer of “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk,” will return to shoot the film with Jennifer Lame (“Hereditary,” “Manchester By The Sea“) editing. Composer Ludwig Göransson (“Black Panther“) will fill in for Hans Zimmer who is already busy with scoring Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune.”
