Got a Tip?

Ava DuVernay & Director Victoria Mahoney Teaming For TV Adaptation Of Octavia E. Butler’s ‘Dawn’

Victoria Mahoney made headlines a couple of years back when it was announced that she would become the first Black female director to helm a “Star Wars” film, as she was signed on to be the second-unit director for ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ And it appears that her flirtation with space isn’t over, as she is teaming with Ava DuVernay on a new series titled “Dawn.”

According to THR, Mahoney has been signed to write and direct the upcoming series, “Dawn,” based on the Octavia E. Butler sci-fi novel of the same name. “Dawn” tells the story of an African-American woman that aligns herself with aliens to help resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war wiped out humanity. The book is the first in a trilogy of novels, dubbed the “Lilith’s Brood” story. The other novels are “Adulthood Rites” and “Imago.”

“Dawn” has been given a script-to-series order by Amazon, with Ava DuVernay’s Array Filmworks along to produce. If the script written by Mahoney is approved, the show will be greenlit for an entire season order with the writer also directing the pilot episode, if not more.

In addition to her work on ‘Rise of Skywalker,” Mahoney is probably best known for her work on the small screen. Over the years, she’s helmed episodes of series such as “You,” “I Am The Night,” “Power,” and “American Crime.” Most recently, she is a director of an episode of the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced HBO series, “Lovecraft Country.”

Obviously, “Dawn” is in the early stages of development, with no casting or production even planned until the first script is approved. So, it still might be a while until fans of Butler’s sci-fi novel will see it brought to life.
