Got a Tip?

Zack Snyder Says Martin Scorsese’s Criticism Of Superhero Movies Is “Fair”

There was a time a couple of years ago when people would just hammer Martin Scorsese with questions about superhero films because it would make for a good soundbite, as the filmmaker clearly didn’t enjoy those works. On the other end of the superhero film spectrum, you have Zack Snyder, who is constantly asked to defend superhero films and talk about how great and meaningful they can be. So, what happens when you have an unstoppable force (Snyder) asked to critique the words of an immovable object (Scorsese)? Well, you get cordiality, apparently.

In a recent interview from The Guardian, Snyder is asked to talk about Martin Scorsese’s very public criticisms of the superhero film genre. And while you might expect Snyder to lash out at Scorsese for being grossly misinformed and uneducated about superhero films, the filmmaker instead just is reverential to Scorsese and doesn’t disagree. However, Snyder does poke fun at the idea that maybe he was only talking about Marvel films and not his own DC superhero epics.

“Oh, it’s fair. Martin Scorsese is a genius,” said Snyder. “If you’re really good at something, commenting on that world is completely within your rights. And it doesn’t diminish my respect for him. I’m certain he wasn’t talking about my movies [laughs]. He might’ve been, but I like to think he wasn’t. He meant the other ones.”

Speaking about “the other ones,” aka the Marvel Studios films, Snyder doesn’t offer many critiques. Instead, when asked what he would change about the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he offers a rather diplomatic response.

“Nothing,” he replied. “I could have changed it so it would have maybe made less money or been less beloved. But for what they’ve created – I don’t know that there is a better way to do it.”

So, if you’re one of those people hoping that Snyder would bash the MCU and say something like “DC RULEZ AND MARVEL DROOLZ” then you’re out of luck. It would appear that the filmmaker is well aware that the films of the MCU are vastly different than the superhero projects he was working on with the Snyderverse.

If you’d rather watch a decidedly non-superhero film from Snyder, his “Army of the Dead” is now available on Netflix. By the way, to honor the release of the zombie film, Netflix has graced the world with a near-30-minute behind-the-scenes doc about ‘Army.’
