Got a Tip?

Lenny Kravitz Joins Lee Daniels’ Civil Rights Drama ‘Selma’ With Robert De Niro & Hugh Jackman

Did you suffer through the E! pre-Oscar show red carpet last night in anticipation of last night’s Academy Awards?

Maybe just to see the gowns and tuxes, maybe to point and snicker with fashion police-like glee or maybe you tuned in much like rubbernecking at a car wreck on the highway, its hard to turn away when those E! hosts ask those incredibly inane questions.

However, if you did tune in then you did see “Precious” star Lenny Kravitz tell dbag Ryan Seacrest that he would be making a reunion with Lee Daniels and appearing the filmmaker’s next picture, the civil rights drama, “Selma.”

Kravitz revealed was that he would be playing the civil rights activist Andrew Young, making him the third actor who has joined the film. Hugh Jackman recently joined the film and Robert De Niro signed on months ago as a racist Governor George Wallace. De Niron’s involvement has been a rumor, but Moveline confirmed his participation on Friday night. There’s no word on who who Jackman will play, but Empire has suggested he might play the smaller part of James Reeb, a minister who was fatally beaten to death by segregationists during these marches.

The film centers on the famous Selma-to-Montgomery marches in 1965 to help get voting rights for African Americans listed in the Constitution and that helped shift public opinion on civil rights overall

Daniels had two big awards nights this past weekend. On Friday night “Precious” cleaned up at the Spirit Awards taking Best Picture, Best Director and five awards in total. And at last night’s 82 Annual Academy Awards the film took two awards, a Best Supporting Role for Mo’Nique and a surprise upset win for Best Adapted Screenplay which many assumed would go to Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for “Up In The Air.”

Though “Selma” is next and shoots in May, Daniels also has an adaptation of the Broadway play “Miss Saigon” in the works as well.
