Netflix has been actively recruiting Oscar-caliber filmmakers to help provide the streaming giant with must-watch content. To that end, they’ve secured the next documentary from directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The Oscar-winning pair have been behind “Free Solo” and “The Rescue,” focusing on the harrowing task of rescuing a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave that made national news.
Their next film, “Return To Space,” will debut on Netflix in early April, and the streaming service has released the first-look trailer for the documentary (See below) that focuses on the modern commercial space race, which includes Elon Musk’s company SpaceX that has been notably trying to build a demand for commercial space flights with multiple publicity stunts over the last couple of years.
Space travel has always fascinated humanity; it’ll be interesting to see how folks view the technology and innovation when it’s mainly been marketed as an expensive theme park for the extremely wealthy. It remains to be seen if regular folks will ever get to visit space or feel weightlessness in their lifetime.
Here is the upcoming doc’s official synopsis from Netflix:
For the first time, Oscar-winning directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Free Solo, The Rescue) point their lenses to the sky, covering the inspirational rise of SpaceX and Elon Musk’s two-decade effort to resurrect America’s space travel ambitions. Offering rare access inside the first crewed mission launched from U.S. soil since the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011, this is an intimate portrait of the engineers and astronauts chosen for the historic moment. Following NASA veterans Bob Behnken, Doug Hurley, and their families in the leadup to launch, Return To Space brings viewers along for their thrilling ride to the International Space Station and into mission control with Musk and the SpaceX team as they bring them back to Earth for a dramatic splashdown return.
“Return To Space” is set to debut exclusively on April 7. You can check out the trailer below.
