Got a Tip?

Sofia Coppola Options Francine Prose’s Tragic Teen Coming-Of-Age Tale “Goldengrove”

Sofia Coppola has bought out the option to Francine Prose’s critically acclaimed 2008 coming-of-age tale, “Goldengrove.”

Centering on thirteen year old Nico, the novel follows her exploration of grief and mourning over her sister Margaret’s drowning. With a lack of support from her parents, Nico finds comfort in Margaret’s boyfriend, Aaron, with whom she drifts into a poignant and complicated relationship.

The story definitely has a Coppola sensibility to it and could potentially tap into Coppola’s own experiences with brother Gian-Carlo passing away in a speedboating accident at the age of 22, when Coppola was only 14. Her latest film “Somewhere” was also previously revealed to be partly inspired by her relationship with her father.

Whether the optioning of “Goldengrove” will end up seeing Coppola adapt herself, simply produce, or if it even evolves into anything at all remains to be seen — “Somewhere” is still months away from a likely Venice-Toronto premiere. [I Heart Sofia]
