Got a Tip?

‘Barbie’ Soundtrack Sneakily Dominates 2024 Grammy Nominations

Yes, SZA earned nine 2024 Grammy nominations for her seminal album “SOS” and Taylor Swift got her annual six or more nods, but a certain movie soundtrack shocked in its performance. The “Barbie” soundtrack earned 12 nominations overall including a stunning two individual noms in the Song of the Year category for “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and “Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa. It also earned a nomination for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media alongside its Barbienheimer brother, “Oppenheimer,” by Ludwig Göransson.

In the Best Song Written For Visual Media category “Barbie” tracks took a whopping four out of the five slots including “Dance The Night,” “What Was I Made For?,” “Barbie World” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, and “I’m Just Ken” which, yes, gives Ryan Gosling his first Grammy nomination. The fifth slot goes to Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” That hit song earned a 2023 Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category earlier this year.

The remaining Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media nominations went to Ludwig Göransson, again, for the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” score, and John Williams for both “The Fablemans” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” scores. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt represent the “Barbie” nomination in this category. The fact Nicolas Brittell was snubbed here either for the “Andor” or the final season of “Succession” scores is an embarrassment.

Notably, Eilish took five nominations overall for “What Was I Made For?” including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video. Her sixth nomination came in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Never Felt So Alone” by Labrinth featuring Eilish.

“Barbie World” saw Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice earn 2 nominations including Best Rap Song. Dua Lipa also earned two nominations for “Dance the Night” including Song of the Year.

“Barbie” also earned a Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media alongside soundtracks for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Aurora” (Daisy Jones and the Six), “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3: Awesome Mix, Vol. 3,” and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” (the greatest awards present Roku ever stumbled into).

In other notable categories, Meryl Streep earned her third Grammy nomination this time in the Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording category. Other nominees in that field include William Shatner, Rick Rubin, Senator Bernie Sanders, and former First Lady Michelle Obama who previously won this category in 2020.

The Best Music Film category saw “Moonage Daydream,” “How I’m Feeling Now” (Lewis Capaldi doc), “Live From Paris, The Big Steppers Tour” (Kendrick Lamar), “I Am Everything” (Little Richard Sundance documentary), and “Dear Mama” (FX’s Tupac Shakur docuseries) make the cut.

Beyond SZA’s impressive tally, Phoebe Bridges, engineer-mixer Serban Ghenea, and Victoria Monét took seven nominations. “Barbie” producer and songwriter Jack Antonoff joined Jon Batiste, boygenius, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and the aforementioned Eilish with six noms overall.

Major snubs this year include Reneé Rapp, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress (outside of a “Barbie” soundtrack inclusion), Jessie Ware, Carly Rae Jepsen, Eslabon Armado, Grupo Frontera, and TOMORROWXTOGETHER, among others.

Oh, and we can’t forget the new inaugural Pop Dance Recording category which saw Kylie Minogue earn her first nomination since 2009 for “Padam Padam.” She joins Troye Sivan (“Rush”), Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding (“Miracle”), David Guetta, Anne-Marie & Coi Leray (“Baby Don’t Hurt Me”) as well as Bebe Rexa and David Guetta (“One In A Million”).
