'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire': Adam Wingard Says He'll Likely Do A Trilogy

2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” ended up one of the pandemic era’s biggest box office successes, cementing a future for the Legendary franchise.  Warner Bros. confirmed a sequel in March 2022, with director Adam Wingard returning to direct. And if “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” also does well, Wingard wouldn’t pass up the chance to keep his Monsterverse story going even longer.

In an interview with DiscussingFilm, the director confirmed he’d love to do a trilogy of “Godzilla vs. Kong” films. “The whole idea that if you’ve done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there’s a trilogy in there,” he told the outlet. “I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell.”

However, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” needs to hit or surpass the gross of Wingard’s 2021 film for him to make a trilogy. “It just depends on how it does and how things kind of shape out. I know that sounds like a bullshit diplomatic answer,” he continued, laughing. “But the truth is, If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I do have more story to tell with these monsters and I know where I’d go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back on for another one if things worked out!”

This fifth entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of “Godzilla vs. Kong” that sees the two titular Titans face off against an all-new threat: Scar King, an orange simian Titan with an army of great apes at his back. As Godzilla and Kong battle their new adversary, humans scramble to discover more of the forgotten origins of the Titans and how they may bring the world back into balance.

The new film stars Rebecca HallDan StevensKaylee HottleAlex FernsFala Chen, and Rachel House.  Brian Tyree Henry also returns as conspiracy podcaster Bernie Hayes. Wingard directs a script by Terry RossioSimon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater.

So will “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” be another box office smash in March next to “Dune: Part Two“? Find out when the film hits theaters next weekend on March 29. And if its, don’t be surprised if Warner Bros. greenlights another sequel for Wingard to complete his trilogy.
