'War Game' Trailer: Upcoming Doc Discusses What Might Happen If There's A Political Coup In The U.S.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in U.S. politics as we approach the forthcoming Presidential Election. What happens if Donald Trump wins? But perhaps more importantly, what happens if Donald Trump loses? Could we see something that would echo the Jan. 6 insurrection, but worse? That’s at the center of the new documentary, “War Game.”

As seen in the trailer, “War Game” gathers a group of respected politicians and policy makers from the last five presidential administrations. These folks have been gathered to take part in a role-playing “game” where they have to act out what might happen if there is a political coup led by members of the U.S. military.

We saw the film as part of this year’s Sundance, and in our review, we said, “Sweeping, realistic, and theatrically escalating, ‘War Game’ is a must-watch and really enthralling stuff. As we head into the 2024 election, a year that will surely be a grueling and nail-biting experience, full of worry and stress, ‘War Game’ depicts democracy as fragile as ever.”

“War Game” debuts in select theaters on August 2. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

War Game sweeps audiences into an elaborate future-set simulation that dramatically escalates the threat posed by the January 6, 2021 insurrection. The film follows a bipartisan group of US defense, intelligence, and elected policymakers spanning five presidential administrations as they participate in an unscripted role-play exercise. Portraying a fictional President of the United States and his advisors, they confront a political coup backed by rogue members of the US military in the wake of a contested 2024 presidential election. Like actors in a thriller, but with profound real-world stakes, the players have only six hours to save American democracy.
