Paul Mescal Doesn’t Like People Saying Films Are “Content”: “That’s A Filthy Word”

Paul Mescal is one of the best young actors working today. However, up until now, he hasn’t really worked on any blockbuster projects. That’s going to change with “Gladiator II,” which is about as big as a film can get. But don’t call it “content.” Mescal isn’t a fan of that word. 

Speaking with The Times, Paul Mescal talked about the film industry and his career. Specifically, he talked about how some people discuss feature films as being “content.” We’ve seen this quite a bit when it comes to creating films or TV series for streaming services. Mescal takes issue with people calling films “content.”

“Over the last few years people have been talking about films as content,” Mescal said. “That’s a filthy word. It’s not ‘content’, it’s fucking work.”

He continued, “I’m not being snobby, but there are two concurrent industries. One that works with a lack of care, artistic integrity. Go nuts, make stuff with Instagram followers as a factor, whatever … But the other is what has always been there — the craft of film — making, directing, lighting and production design. That keeps artists alive.”

Clearly, Mescal sets up the difference in his mind about what constitutes content and what is actual artistry. He doesn’t go into detail about what’s what, but we can all fill in the blanks as to what he means. The actor is clearly talking about these films that get made with stars that have huge social media followings. Projects that may or may not go straight to streaming. Then, on the other side, you have stuff like “Gladiator II,” a blockbuster, same as any other, but with a ton of care put into it. Made for the art, not the money. 

Basically, it’s doubtful that we’ll see Mescal tackle some cash grab franchise in the future. He’s all about the art, it would seem.
