Given that “Twilight: New Moon” smashed box office records last fall, it’s no surprise that the largest big box retailer in the country is now ready to do everything they can to cash in on the impending home video release.
WalMart has announced that they will be the exclusive retailers of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon Ultimate Fan Edition” that will hit store shelves on March 20th. The two-disc DVD/single BluRay release will be packed to the gills with over 50 minutes of special features, but the one that will have “Twilight” fans going gaga will be a seven-minute feature on the forthcoming “Twilight: Eclipse” that will include a scene from the movie.
However, in an effort to get as much cash out of Twilight fans as possible, WalMart will also be creating in-store “Twilight Saga Shops” where lots of crappy, officially licensed products will be on sale for the discerning shopper. Home Media Magazine outlines some of the goods: Wolf and vampire lover tanks for $7; Twilight Saga themed tees for $9; Jacob Black and Edward Cullen tees ($9); Twilight Saga themed jewelry (bracelets, pins, key chains, earrings, necklaces) for $5; Twilight Saga themed messenger bags ($12) and totes ($9); Twilight Saga books, including “The Twilight Saga: New Moon Official Illustrated Companion Book” ($13.24) and “Life Story” magazine cover issue featuring Twilight ($8.95); and The Twilight Saga New Moon Ultimate Fan Poster, including exclusive DVD cover art for $5. Yeesh. Just imagine, there are factories somewhere churning out this crap.
Of course, there will be a regular 2-disc DVD/single disc BluRay without the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” preview but no true fan is going to go near that edition. WalMart are now taking pre-orders online if you want to avoid being crushed by throngs of vampire nerds.
