Varese Saraband has announced the tracklist and a February 23rd release date for Danny Elfman’s score for the production troubled “The Wolfman.” As we previously reported, Elfman was originally hired and wrote a score to the film, only to have it scrapped and be replaced in the fall by Tangerine Dream member Paul Haslinger. Then, Elfman was re-hired again last month and his score was brought back in.
As we’ve well documented, “The Wolfman” has had nothing but problems since its gone in front of cameras, and at one point a new set of editors were brought in to try and salvage the project. We can presume that the film Elfman originally composed his music for bears little resemblance to whatever is in the can now. When Elfman was re-hired, Conrad Pope was quietly brought in to help stitch together Elfman’s score to whatever the finished product looks like now.
Varese Saraband has put some clips up of the finished work and we have to say, we’re fairly underwhelmed. While “Wolf Suite Pt. 1” does seem to be in the Hans Zimmer wheelhouse of abstract composition, the rest of the clips for “Gypsy Massacre,” “Country Carnage” and “The Traveling Montage” all seem like very rote, period piece/chase music/moody music material. We didn’t find it much to be excited about, but have a listen for yourself here (scroll down).
“The Wolfman” opens, for better or worse, on February 12th.
