Scott Cooper To Write & Direct Roswell UAP Thriller At 20th Century Studios

Now that “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” is in the rearview mirror, what’s next for director Scott Cooper? According to Deadline, there’s a new possibility to go along with Cooper’s “contemporary crime two-hander” in the works at United Artists and Comanche,” Michael Mann‘s script about the true story of American frontier abductee Cynthia Ann Parker.

So, what’s this new mystery project? The outlet reports that Cooper will team up with 20th Century Studios again for a thriller set in Roswell, New Mexico. The film follows a rancher who finds debris scattered around his property, with the government soon intervening as rumors and conspiracy theories begin to swirl about a UAP-related event. Cooper would write and direct the picture, with Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein co-producing via Gotham Group.

That’s another buzzy iron in the fire for Cooper, who also hasn’t ruled out a follow-up to his recent Bruce Springsteen biopic starring Jeremy Allan White. “Deliver Me From Nowhere” had strong reviews coming out of its world premiere at Telluride last year, but it didn’t catch fire with audiences. The film grossed just $45 million in its theatrical run worldwide, failing to break even on its $55 million budget.

In that sense, a pivot makes sense for Cooper, and this Roswell thriller could be the most distinct one of the four current possibilities for his next film. “Comanche” would be in the same wheelhouse as “Hostiles,” while his UA crime film is similar to “Black Mass,” “Out Of The Furnace,” and, less directly, 2022’s “The Pale Blue Eye.” We’ll see what speaks to Cooper the most.
