Now you can finally sleep easy at night.
It’s been up in the air for a few months — at one point it was thought perhaps Harold Ramis would helm it* — but Ivan Reitman has confirmed that he will direct “Ghostbusters 3.”
After months of speculation, Reitman told MTV that he would in fact direct the project. “They have delivered a draft,” Reitman said of Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky’s screenplay. “We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.”
What about Sigourney Weaver’s recent comments that Bill Murray’s character would return as a ghost?
Reitman responded coyly, “I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said. She’s been so busy on ‘Avatar,’ I’ve not been able to find her. There’s some very cool things in the new draft, let’s just put it that way.”
Could he be hinting that old ideas have been jettisoned because most fans were disappointed to hear the news? It definitely sounds like they’ve been through a few drafts already. This project has been on the table for several months now, but who knows. We’re taking a wait and see approach (but yes, we’re skeptical, is this necessary?).
Geeks seem to be excited about this confirmation, but we’ll remind everyone that Reitman’s last directorial gig yielded, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” in 2006 and there hasn’t been a great film since 1993’s “Dave” with Kevin Kline (yes, “great” is relative here).
*Surely once everyone saw “Year One” they decided, “yeah, that would be a fucking horrible idea.” Not gonna happen.
