'Avatar' Day Hits August 21: Do Fox & James Cameron Hate Harvey Weinstein?

As you may have read in brief this morning, Fox has officially declared August 21 “Avatar” day, hooray!

What does this mean exactly? The James Cameron sci-fi actioner in 3D — which wowed many fans at ComicCon, but apparently didn’t change everyone’s lives — will screen, 15 minutes of it, anyhow, for free in various tbd 3D-enabled theaters across the country.

Woo, early promo for “Avatar” and James Cameron, but uhh, Harvey Weinstein is probably thinking. “Dude, what the fuck??” Even the guy down at the bodega knows that The Weinstein Company are hurting financially right now and their prized goose, Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” is set to debut in North American theaters that exact same day.

Is Harvey probably pissed? You fucking bet. If pundits like Nikki Finke are to believed, the survival of TWC rests solely on the success of Tarantino’s WWII fantasy film, which is talky and not that action-y as it is. This Fox move could really divide a similar geek audience (males, boys, virgins). So do Fox and Cameron hate Harvey Weinstein? Was it a simple random mistake? Is Harvey on the phone right now with Fox’s Tom Rothman asking, “dude, what the fuck did I ever do to you?”
