Len Wiseman is set to helm a film adaptation of the graphic novel “Shrapnel” which he came across on a trip to a comic store. The film will center on a future where humans have colonized the solar system and formed a Solar Alliance to govern the planets with Venus, the last rebellious holdout, fighting back with the help of a self-exiled former Marine. Sounds like a blatant “Avatar” ripoff? [THR]

Rinko Kikuchi has joined anime auteur Mamoru Oshii’s first live-action pic in eight years. “Assault Girls,” will star, Kikuchi, Meisa Kuroki and Hinako Saeki as hunters in a post-apocalyptic desert landscape of morphing beasts called “sand whales.” [Variety]

Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable” is now back on track with Denzel Washington and the studio both returning on board. The actor will play a veteran engineer who joins a young conductor to stop an unmanned runaway train loaded with toxic cargo. Meh, but looks like some either agreed to salary cuts or the studio went back into the piggy bank. [Variety]

James Wan is set to team with Paul W.S. Anderson and write/direct a film adaptation of “Castlevania.” The game centers on a war between the vampire hunting family of the Belmonts and Dracula. Sounds like all kinds of terrible. [FirstShowing]
