Trailer: 'The Time Traveler's Wife' Starring Eric Bana & Rachel McAdams

The poster and trailer for “The Time Traveler’s Wife” have made their way online this evening. While it’s neither a book (by Audrey Niffenegger) or screenplay we’ve read, we’re greatly intrigued by this film because of the cast (two great actors in Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana), the fairly unique idea of melding romance and sci-fi, the musicians involved (indie rockers Broken Social Scene at least on some minor level), and we’ll admit, because it’s been delayed for sooo long.

Hide away a film for long enough and curious minded film bloggers will always become hyper curious as to why. Generally, it’s because a film is not good and or fairly problematic which seems to have been the case with this one, at least at one point.

One thing’s for sure, though. The poster is super-generic and does not look good. It screams middle-of-the-road love story film and the sci-fi angle hopefully makes it more interesting than simply that.

Here’s a synopsis:

The Time Traveler’s Wife stars Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana as a couple dealing with one of the most difficult problems in a relationship — they’re constantly separated. No, this isn’t a story of long distance love. Instead, Henry (Eric Bana) is afflicted with a rare genetic disorder which causes him to time travel with no control. His wife, Clare (Rachel McAdams), wants nothing more than to make their relationship survive despite his disappearances.

Directed by Robert Schwentke (“Flightplan”) this trailer feels much more chick-lit flick than we hoped, but it’s possible that’s just the way New Line is marketing this thing and or its entirely possible this is simply exactly what the film is. The cheesy anthem-rock song doesn’t help either. Anyone know what it is? There’s no way in hell we would ever recognize it, never listening to music like that on any regular basis [ed. It’s “Broken” by Lifehouse, ewww]. If there’s umm, a less chick-flicky version of that trailer, we’d love to see it and we hate to say that because we hate to come across as the man-child hordes that pervade the Internet, but really this trailer is about as good as the poster. “The Time Traveler’s Wife” shot in Toronto back in September 2007, and the post-production process seems to have been problematic which why this its taken forever to reach the screens.

To be fair though, New Line was also absorbed by Warner Bros. last year which in of itself could have delayed the film up to a year. Considering how long it’s been it almost certainly a least threw the picture on the back burner.

Mychael Danna, who’s also co-written the music to Terry Gilliam’s ” The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” has written the score. Arliss Howard and Ron Livingston co-star and the film is due for release on August 14. [poster via IVillage/ RopeofSilicon]
