Got a Tip?

Random: Weird Viral Videos For ‘Rudo Y Cursi’ Starring Gael Garcia Bernal

Are we the only blog in North America excited about “Rudo Y Cursi”? Maybe? What is it you say? It’s the re-teaming of “Y Tu Mama Tambien” bff’s, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal for the Spanish-language comedy “Rudo y Cursi,” directed by Carlos Cuaron, Alfonso Cuaron’s younger brother and the writer of ‘Tambien’ and Cuaron’s earlier screwball-ish comedy, “Sólo con tu pareja” (which is totally great, btw).

Already picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for a May 8 release, Luna and Bernal play dimwitted brothers recruited by rival soccer teams and the film is the first produced by Cha Cha Cha (production company of Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu).

Already a big hit in Mexcio where it was released in December, the film’s soundtrack features tracks by Juana Molina, Black Lips, Nortec Collective, Devendra Banhartand many others (it’s a two disc set). Bernal has a friendship and history with the hirsute Banhart having sung on “Cristobal” from the album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon and he included the song in the credits of his feature-directorial debut, Déficit” last year.

Anywhoo, now there’s these random viral videos on YouTube promoting the film and this one has Garcia Bernal singing along to a Spanish version of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me.” It’s bizarre to say the least. Call it a little bit of lost in translation. But if you’ve ever watched telenovas from Mexican TV, the absurdity of it might make a tiny bit more sense. There’s also another strange one that features Bernal singing the same song only to a Spongebob Squarepants video clip… uhh, yeah. OK, then.

Thanks to the Twitter user who pointed this out. Tips are always appreciated.
