In what is definitely one of the most out-there tidbits to emerge from Sundance thus far, Bill Hader tells C.H.U.D he’s teamed with SNL writer Simon Rich for a slasher script that’s being pitched to Judd Apatow, described as “Straw Dogs” meets “Halloween”meets “Home Alone” meets “Monster Squad”.” ‘I don’t know if it’s even going to get made,’ As far as the Apatow interest, ‘Judd met with us and said “I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie.”‘
Hader went on to elaborate on preliminary script details. ” ‘It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture – this sounds really hoity toity – you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That’s basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house? What would you and your dipshit friends do about it?'”
Hmm…This supplants the mystery of whether or not Joaquin Phoenix crashed a gay party in douchebag disguise as the bizarre Sundance story were most interested in. For now, file this next to Kevin Smith’s “Red State” as potentially insane, pseudo-horror projects that may never even reach production. Apatow’s obviously found a niche with his brand of comedy, but stepping way outside the box here would be an interesting departure. In the mean time, look for Hader in the upcoming Greg Mottola directed “Adventureland”, which just screened at Sundance to generally positive reviews.
