Got a Tip?

Academy Award Hopeful Vin Diesel Says The Oscars Has A “Stigma Towards Action Films”

Earlier this week, Vin Diesel predicted that “Furious 7” was going to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Seriously, he meant it when he said the movie in which expensive cars jump skyscraper to skyscraper will be honored by the Academy. But he realizes that there is a big obstacle to leap over in currying favor with voters, who he believes turn their noses up at anything with explosions.

“…we all know that there’s a little stigma towards action films, we know it, we’ve heard people complain about it, we’ve heard Marvel complain about it, we’ve heard DC complain about it, and now Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Batman has never gotten a shot at that,” he told Associated Press (via The Wrap), adding, “The Oscars have been somewhat criticized in the last couple of years for maybe not being as populist as they could be, but we have a very powerful movie here.”

Vin also adds that his franchise is reaching a bigger female audience than ever, and claims many women want to see the car-filled mayhem more than dudes. After all, the latest installment is about family and stuff, so maybe that’s why it’s connecting more with that audience. Perhaps in turn that thematic material will resonate more strongly with Oscar voters. But if that doesn’t work the magic on Oscar-types, perhaps this featurette about one of the cars in the movie will. “Furious 7” opens on April 3rd.
