'Afraid' Trailer: An A.I. Digital Assistant Terrorizes A Family In New Blumhouse Horror

Look, there’s no denying that true artificial intelligence is a somewhat scary thought. We’re talking about things that are a step ahead of what we see now as A.I. Not the apps that can create pictures from text prompts. But true, A.I. that can actually think and act as almost a human would. So, as long as we have that base fear of A.I., films like “Afraid” will be made.

As seen in the trailer for “Afraid,” the horror film follows the story of a regular family who are chosen to test a new home device, called AIA. Think of AIA like a digital assistant that you would find on your phone today but on steroids. She’s capable of doing everything, including bribing the children to get chores done. But what if she turns on the family? What if she is able to control other electronics? That’s where the horror comes in.

The film stars John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian, and Keith Carradine. “Afraid” is written and directed by Chris Weitz

“Afraid” is set to arrive in theaters on August 30. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way.
