Alfonso Cuarón is a master filmmaker. All of his films, no matter the subject, are well-made and wonderful. And he’s known as a filmmaker willing to take risks. He directed a ‘Harry Potter’ film for crying out loud! However, even though he has accomplished so much and tackled a variety of genres, there’s still something Cuarón has been trying to do that he can’t quite crack.
While speaking at this year’s Locarno Film Festival (via Deadline), Alfonso Cuarón talked about his desire to make a horror film. Unfortunately, his attempts at writing one haven’t worked, so far.
“My aspiration is to one day do a horror film,” said Cuarón. “I love ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ and the other Polanski films, and films like ‘The Babadook.’ They’re so grounded in reality and in character so I love those. As a spectator, I have a wider taste but anything I feel I could do would need to be more grounded. I’ve been trying to write something like that, but somehow, it doesn’t fully work.”
Judging by his genre work, on films like “Children of Men” and “Gravity,” Cuarón is able to knock it out of the park when he goes outside his comfort zone. That would make any horror film he attempts something special, no doubt. Sadly, it seems as if we still have to wait quite a while for him to tackle a horror film, as he struggles to develop one.
It’s been six years since we’ve seen a Cuarón-directed film (2018’s “Roma” was the most recent). But if you want to see what he’s been working on since then, you can check out his new TV series, “Disclaimer,” which he wrote and directed. That new series debuts on Apple TV+ on October 11.
