‘Alien: Romulus’: Cailee Spaeny Says New Film Sits Between First & Second ‘Alien’ Films In Timeline

Believe it or not, the “Alien” franchise is more alive than ever before. Next year, there’s the potential for not only a new TV show in the franchise, but also the new sequel, titled “Alien: Romulus.” And if you’re a fan of the first two ‘Alien’ films, you’re in luck with the latter of those projects.

While talking with Variety, “Alien: Romulus” star Cailee Spaeny, who is out there promoting her starring role in the critically acclaimed film, “Priscilla,” opened up about the new sci-fi horror film from director Fede Alvarez. While we don’t know too much about the plot of the revival, Spaeny is here to tell us exactly where the standalone ‘Romulus’ fits in with the previous entries in the franchise.

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaeny said. “They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

She added, “And I have so much fun. I like trying to do as many different things as I can. So I swapped my high heels and my beehive for spacesuits and lots of wire work. … I love watching those old ‘70s, ‘80s action sci-fi films. And I’m such a fan of that IP and Sigourney Weaver. It’s legendary to get to be a part of it.”

Again, it’s unclear what the story of ‘Romulus’ will be. Obviously, we have to assume Xenomorphs will be terrorizing humans on a spaceship, as that’s what they tend to do. But will this be a one-off film or the kickstart of a new spinoff franchise? We’ll have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, Spaeny is one of the best up-and-coming stars and Alvarez has proven himself to be awfully adept at working in the horror realm. So, ‘Romulus’ definitely has the chance to be something special.

“Alien: Romulus” is expected to arrive in theaters on August 16, 2024.
