Got a Tip?

‘All Of Us Strangers,’ ‘Beef’ & Ryan Gosling Top 2023 Gotham Awards Nominations

The first real official precursor awards event is here, the 2023 Gotham Awards. And while the SAG strike is still ongoing, that doesn’t mean the actors went unrecognized. The question is whether those not part of signatory films at A24 or NEON will be able to attend if there isn’t a resolution in the weeks to come. But more importantly, we have nominees and they are major films and television programs in the awards season game.

Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” topped all films with four nominations including Best International Feature, Best Screenplay, Outstanding Lead Performance (Andrew Scott), and Outstanding Supporting Performance (Claire Foy). Celine Song’s “Past Lives” took three nominations including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance (Greta Lee).

Other Best Feature nominees include “Passages,” “Reality,” “Showing Up” and “A Thousand and One.” Additional Best International Feature nominees include “Poor Things,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Totem” and “The Zone of Interest.” And, yes, the International Feature qualifications are somewhat puzzling.

On the television side, “Beef” took three nominations for Breakthrough Series (Under 40 Minutes) and two Outstanding Performance in a New Series nominations (Steven Yeun and Ali Wong). “Swarm,” “Dead Ringers,””The English,” “I’m A Virgo,” “A Small Light” and “The Last of Us” earned two nominations each.

This year, the Gothams removed the budgetary qualification from previous years (traditionally $30 million and under) to expand the field of nominees. A number of studios and filmmakers stuck to the awards’ original “independent spirit” and did not submit for consideration. Those films included “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” and “The Color Purple.” Thanks to that budget cap restriction, Ryan Gosling earned a Supporting Actor nomination for “Barbie,” which Warner Bros. decided to submit.

The Gothams previously announced that Bradley Cooper and “Maestro” will receive the Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute and Ben Affleck and “Air” will be honored with the Gotham Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute. Today they revealed that Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice will go to George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” Additional tributes are expected to be announced in the weeks to come.
