One of the most polarizing aspects of “Suicide Squad” has been actor Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker. Some hate the actor’s over-the-top version of the character, while others think that Leto’s tattooed, grill-sporting psycho clown fits the current era. Yet one thing everyone can agree on is the film’s Joker definitely is very stylized, with his bright suits and purple sports car. So would you believe the filmmakers actually toned down the character for the final product?

Recently, Tina Charad, credited as the “costume graphic illustrator” for the movie, released some unused costume mockups for the Joker in “Suicide Squad,” and… imagine the Joker as seen in the film, but turned up to 11. With more tattoos, more garish clothing and purple boxing shorts that say “Haha Special,” the costume designers were definitely going for a bold Joker.
These images leave me with so many questions. Would the Joker ever wear personalized boxing shorts? Who would make these boxing shorts? Did these poor souls present multiple versions of the shorts and the Joker picked his favorite, a la “Project Runway?” The mind boggles.
Maybe it was the “cut here” tattoo with perforated lines on his neck, right above a row of teeth that made the filmmakers think they went too far. Perhaps it was the countless “Ha” tattoos in the shape of a tank top that went over the limit. Thankfully, these designs were either completely scrapped or toned down.[via AV Club]
