It’s been pretty astounding to watch the unintended promotional tour of those who have been pranked by Sacha Baron Cohen on his new Showtime series, “Who Is America?”: a litany of Tea Partiers, alt-right hardliners and gun nuts tripping over themselves trying to get ahead of being seriously owned by the comedian. First, realizing she’d been duped and probably seriously embarrassing what’s left of her tattered reputation, former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin tried to get ahead of the idiotic things she told Cohen. Then Ex-GOP Congressman Joe Walsh did the same, trying to save some face and suggesting he was coaxed into saying we should arm pre-schoolers, (this is a little bit like the Papa John’s owner saying he was “pressured” into saying the N-word).

There’s little time for an excuse now though as “Who Is America?” is about to air tonight. Perhaps leveraging the buzz, Showtime today has released a 10-minute clip from the show centering on the very bright, reasonable and carefully-though-out idea of arming toddlers in schools to shoot the bad guys. What’s fascinating about Cohen’s show and hoodwinking tactics in today’s climate is just how terrifying they are instead of funny. Sure, this “Who Is America?” clip is pretty amusing and absurd, but it’s also frightening to see how these people think and the outrageous things they’ll assert and reveal when they believe they are in the comfort of sympathetic voices. This is some pretty jaw-dropping stuff, frankly.
The clip with Philip Van Cleave, of Virginia’s Citizen Defense League, for example, in a segment about how pre-Schoolers can protect themselves, is certifiably insane. This senile guy should probably be committed. He’s either one of the stupidest men in America or the scariest, it’s hard to tell.
Also dunked on hard in the clip are Larry Pratt, Executive Director Emeritus of Gun Owners Of America (who laughs waaay too hard in agreement at Cohen’s bro-ing high-five assertion that it’s “not rape if she’s your wife”; he also essentially asks, “this clip won’t air” as part of the segment, right?); GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida; Congressman Dana Rohrabacher; and of course, the aforementioned Joe Walsh who enthusiastically reads off a teleprompter explaining how a new arming-toddler program will help wee tots stay safe.
Here’s the official synopsis.
