If you removed Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger from the equation, the cast lining up for “The Tomb” seems like something that would fit a straight-to-DVD potboiler, instead of a teamup between two aging action icons. Either way, “The Tomb” is gonna be…weird.
Variety reports that the random assortment of Amy Ryan (who surely deserves better than this, though working with Sly and Arnie must be too good to resist), Vincent D’Onofrio, 50 Cent and Vinnie Jones have come aboard the film. The recap, of the story penned by Miles Chapman (“Road House 2: Last Call“), follows Ray Breslin (Stallone), a security expert who designed an inescapable, high-tech prison only to be framed for a crime and locked up in it. Arnie will play the standard hardened inmate with a heart of gold. As for everyone else: Ryan will play Sly’s love interest (!?) and business partner; D’Onofrio will be deputy director of the Prisons Bureau who convinces Sly to do one last job; Jones will stretch his wings as an actor, playing — get this — a ruthless guard. And as for Fiddy? No word yet on his role, but five will get you ten he’ll be thug or inmate or thuggish inmate. And in case you forgot, Jim Caviezel is the villain, the prison’s warden.
Mikael Hafstrom (“The Rite,” “1408“) will direct the pic, which is on our must-see list out of sheer curiosity.
