Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” is continuing its winning ways. The courtroom drama already won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and picked up two major honors at the Gotham Awards almost two weeks ago. On Saturday, the NEON release, which has earned $14.9 million outside the U.S., took five prizes at the prestigious European Film Awards including European Film, European Director (Triet), European Actress (Sandra Hüller), and European Screenwriter (Triet, Arthur Harari).
“Anatomy’s” Laurent Sénéchal was honored previously in the European Editing category The movie has also won numerous International Film awards from critics’ groups around the globe making France’s decision not to submit it for the International Film Oscar one of the worst decisions by a submitting committee this century.
Nikolaj Arcel’s “The Promised Land” won three awards: European Actor (Mads Mikkelsen, his second win after “Another Round” in 2020), European Costume Design, and European Cinematography. J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow” took two awards, European Make-up & Hair and European Visual Effects. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” which earned six nominations, went home with just one win, for “European Sound Designer.”
In other categories, “Robot Dreams” took the European Animated Film award while “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” won the European Documentary award.
Vanessa Redgrave was given the European Lifetime Achievement award which was presented to her in a taped video message by her daughter, Joely Richardson. The 86-year-old Redgrave was unable to make the trip to Berlin to receive the honor in person.
