As we approach the Academy Awards ceremony in March, many filmmakers will be doing the rounds for various interviews and podcasts. Oftentimes, these interviews are very surface-level and don’t really shed much light on the films. Recently, on the Adam Buxton Podcast, “Phantom Thread” was featured in two (well, technically one-and-a-half) episodes, and they’re well worth a listen.
First, Buxton welcomed Jonny Greenwood for a quick chat. Greenwood is responsible for the Oscar-nominated score for “Phantom Thread,” as well as the Paul Thomas Anderson films “Inherent Vice,” “The Master,” and “There Will Be Blood.” He provided not just some great insight into the amazing music for “Phantom Thread,” but also a little about his side gig, as a member of a little band called Radiohead. Fans of Radiohead, film scores, and music in general will find this conversation enlightening.
In a full-length episode, Buxton sat down with the man himself, Paul Thomas Anderson, to talk about “Phantom Thread.” If you’ve never listened to a PTA interview, then you’re in for a treat. As serious as many of his films are, the creative mind behind the camera is great fun to listen to. And on this podcast, he’s firing on all cylinders, talking frankly about “Phantom Thread,” as well as his past work. Anderson is quick to mention how “Inherent Vice” might go down as his greatest misunderstood piece of work. He also feels he’ll forever be a bridesmaid and never the bride at the Oscars.
Overall, there are worse ways to spend an hour-plus than listen to two great artists discuss one of the best films of the year. So, give it a listen!
