On the surface, you may not realize that “The Kitchen” is based on a comic book, but like other comic book adaptations like “Road to Perdition,” “From Hell,” and “The Fountain” (just to name a few), “The Kitchen” may not have anybody in capes punching bad guys but does have its roots in the same medium as Spider-Man and Batman. So, it would appear that would give “The Kitchen” filmmaker Andrea Berloff the upper hand if she’s interested in tackling some other comic book properties from DC Comics.
She was asked about this in a new interview with LRM. And when she gives the superhero project she’d be interested in tackling, she goes right for one of the big guns, “Batgirl.”
“Oh my goodness. There are so many. There are so many,” said Berloff. “You would think I would have thought that through, because what an obvious question: Why don’t I just go to them? Yeah, I have not thought it through. I would say…is it a real thing? I think it’s a real thing. I think they’re working on it. I would say maybe ‘Batgirl.’ I think that’s up for grabs. I would say ‘Batgirl.’”
Interestingly, “Batgirl” has been in development for years and was originally intended to be a vehicle for writer-director Joss Whedon. However, for whatever reason, Whedon backed off the project after his stint as an uncredited director on “Justice League” and the project was given to “Birds of Prey” writer Christina Dodson to develop. Since then, it’s been all quiet on the “Batgirl” front.
Berloff could be a great choice for Warner Bros, if the studio is looking for a director for “Batgirl.” The filmmaker is probably best known for her Oscar-nominated script for “Straight Outta Compton,” but is set to make her directorial debut with “The Kitchen.” The latter film is already sporting some pretty good buzz and could make Berloff an in-demand filmmaker when the film finally hits theaters next month.
So, why not give Berloff a shot at “Batgirl?”
