Got a Tip?

Anne Hathaway To Star In ‘The Last Thing He Wanted’ From Filmmaker Dee Rees

Netflix is definitely not a company that is going to let a good thing go. After the monster critical success of “Mudbound,” the streaming service wants to stay in the Dee Rees business, and it looks like they’re going to do just that.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Netflix has signed on to distribute the new film from Academy Award-nominee Dee Rees, titled “The Last Thing He Wanted.” The film, based on the Joan Didion novel of the same name, follows a reporter who quits her job at The Washington Post to care for her father. However, after a strange series of events, the reporter finds herself in the new position as an arms dealer in Central America.

“Dee Rees is an incredibly talented filmmaker who continues to make provocative and entertaining films,” said Netflix’s Scott Stuber. “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Dee and proud to have her part of the Netflix family.”

“The Last Thing He Wanted” will star Anne Hathaway, presumably as the reporter-turned-arms-dealer. The actress is about to be seen in the upcoming heist film “Ocean’s 8,” but has several other projects in various stages of production.

Dee Rees, as mentioned above, is the filmmaker behind the Netflix film “Mudbound,” which was nominated for 4 Oscars. Before “Mudbound,” the director helmed the HBO film “Bessie,” as well as episodes of TV series “Empire” and “When We Rise.” Rees also co-wrote the script for “The Last Thing He Wanted” with screenwriter Marco Villalobos.

No word on a release date, as of yet, however Netflix expects that production on “The Last Thing He Wanted” will commence sometime later this summer.
