We’ve always wondered what the point is in previewing a bunch of clips from a movie instead of just the whole damn thing, and it would appear filmmaker Ava DuVernay has had the same thought. Tomorrow, the director was set to unveil thirty minutes from "Selma" at AFI Fest, but nah, she’ll just show the whole the thing.
"Announced" via Twitter, in a conversation between DuVernay and producer/actress of the film Oprah Winfrey, the director revealed the picture was locked on Friday, and the sound mix was completed over the weekend, and so she’s just going to show the whole dang movie. And why not? DuVernay is clearly excited and very proud of "Selma," and a screening at AFI Fest before it opens next month is a nice boost to its award season fortunes. The tweets are below.
Deadline confirmed with their sources at Paramount that the full movie will be screened, but here’s the thing, it is not the surprise screening that AFI Fest also has planned for Tuesday. Speculation has been running rampant as to what that movie might be, but the trade has ruled out Angelina Jolie‘s "Unbroken," Rob Marshall‘s "Into The Woods," Ridley Scott‘s "Exodus: Gods And Kings," Tim Burton‘s "Big Eyes" and the comedy, "The Interview." It would appear that Clint Eastwood‘s "American Sniper" is a strong possibility. The movie is locked, and already has screening dates set for guild groups and critics next week, so perhaps it’ll hit AFI First? Lots to think about before AFI announces the mystery movie tomorrow.
Starring David Oyelowo, who leads a massive cast, "Selma" will chronicle Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s epic and dangerous march from Selma to Montgomery which led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
