While watching Academy Award-nominated “The Banshees of Inisherin,” whenever I thought I would cry, I would laugh at the next scene as the film cleverly balanced comedy and melancholy. One element of the storytelling that helped guide that balance was the soundtrack composed by Carter Burwell. And soon, fans of the score will have a chance to buy it on vinyl, courtesy of the fine folks at Mondo, Searchlight, and Hollywood Records.
Having worked with writer and director Martin McDonagh previously on “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Seven Psychopaths,” and “In Bruges” which also starred Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, it was easy for the two to collaborate on the score to bring this film to life. McDonagh had a piece in mind for one section of the film performed by a Balinese gamelan ensemble. With that in mind and after seeing a rough cut of the film, Burwell found inspiration and ran.

The score isn’t a traditional or “old” Irish soundtrack, but it takes inspiration from old Irish folk music and harmonizes it perfectly with the setting and tone of “Banshees.” Drawing from that old Irish sound of the harp and flute, Burwell mixes the traditional with the gamelan instruments and a keyboard that plays bell sounds to create an audible representation of the conflict, nuance, and heartbreak.
Mondo Record Label Manager Mo Shafeek stated, “It takes small steps backward and forwards like crashing waves on a lonely island, strings, and woodwinds dancing with one another, in a waltz. The score plays like a dance between two overlapping voices– occasionally harmonizing but never connecting.”
Fans will find the complete film score and six additional tracks not available on streaming and will feature both performances of the titular track performed by Gleeson. The vinyl is available for pre-order on Mondo’s online shop starting Wednesday, March 15.
