Will Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” be the movie of the summer? To claim that title, Gerwig’s latest needs to fend off Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” at the box office on its opening weekend. But “Barbie” has something “Oppenheimer” doesn’t: a soundtrack flush with pop music’s biggest stars; so, the smart money is on “Barbie” in this bout.
Rolling Stone announced the “Barbie” soundtrack today over Instagram (see below), and, as one may have guessed, the list of artists on it is impressive. While the tracklist isn’t out yet, the soundtrack’s artists include: Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FIFTY FIFTY, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khaliz, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Pink Pantheress, Ryan Gosling, Tame Impala, and The Kid Laroi. And on top of that, Dua Lipa also shows up in “Barbie” as Mermaid Barbie; likely only a cameo role, but still a big deal.
What’s more, Lipa will drop her single for the “Barbie” soundtrack, “Dance The Night,” today. Lipa announced that on Monday, so keep an eye out for the song on Spotify and elsewhere. It’s also curious, but not surprising, to see Gosling on the soundtrack. The actor has plenty of musical experience with his bands, side-projects, and singing and performing in movies like “La La Land,” “Blue Valentine,” and more. Whatever his song ends up being, expect Gosling has it oriented around Ken and his “ken-ergy.” Also of note: Mark Ronson executive produces the “Barbie” soundtrack. And at least Aqua‘s “Barbie Girl” doesn’t show up on the compilation album.
The “Barbie” soundtrack releases the same day as Gerwig’s film hit theaters: Friday, July 21. Check out the Instagram post about the soundtrack and its musician list below.
